Here's why you should travel the world alone, at least once/ by Huck Magazine

Just a few days ago I was so lucky to be interviewed by the great team of Huck Magazine.

"Huck celebrates radical culture – people and movements that paddle against the flow. Inspired by DIY principles and rooted in the rebellious heritage of surf and skate, Huck roams the globe to document grassroots counterculture as it unfolds, seeking out freethinkers who are a wellspring of new thoughts and ideas."

On the occasion of the launch this summer of my "Of surf, waves and wanderlust" series, they asked me about how I ended up doing photography, chasing surfers in tropical destinations; and why I organize surf & yoga retreats.

This interview makes a little resume about my origins in Mexico, and how surfing and traveling changed my life completely. For me, traveling is one of the best experiences you can have. It allows us to ask ourselves about our world and develop our awareness of our everyday actions and our life in general.

Hope this text will inspire you to travel more and be confident out there.

San Sebastian great summer scene!

Hello guys!
I've been having a summer very busy with different projects! I've told you already I'm working at the surf event, the Pantin Classic Pro, also been doing a few photoshoots for some clients, collaborations, and others.
July is a sweet month here in San Sebastian with a great agenda of concerts, expos and other cultural events.

We had at the Patagonia store the concert of my very good friend Johny Card. We used to work together at McCann Erickson and our passion for the ocean brought us together again.

My other good friend Mikel Casal had a very nice expo of his work at the Providence Ghètary gallery. He's a talented illustrator born and raised in San Sebastian. He draws most of the time on wood and he gets his inspiration from the ocean and his friends.

Jorge Hunt had his photographies at a sweet exposition at the Pukas Store also in July organized by Raen Optics. He not only takes rad pictures, but also has a band with his partner Margarita called "Dante place". We had such an awesome night, and to finish also that great weekend, we went to the Heineken Jazz Festival.
We attended some great concerts, but my favorite was "Vintage Trouble". All the band had great energy and they really made us vibrate!

Here are some of the pics I took in those events, I hope you like them. See more pics of these events at my Facebook fan page!

Collaboration Ale Romo X Havaiii.com

Today I feel so blessed and very excited to announce you my most recent collaboration with the guys of Havaiii.com.
Havaii is a clothing and accessories company inspired in the love of traveling and exploring new and exciting horizons. Just like me! That's why this collaboration was perfect match of what we are both doing in separate. Our seeking of adventure and exploring brought us together in this collaboration and we are both hoping that this work will inspire you to live your life by design, doing whatever you want to do while exploring this beautiful world.

From today I'm gonna be their ambassador, taking the brand to new adventures.
Appart from that, we will be doing a couple of things. The team liked so much my blog, that offered me to have my own space at their site to write about my adventures. The name of the blog will be "Tales of Wander" and will be under "Explore and Discover".
Among this, we will prepare a limited edition collection based on my pictures and some other interesting stuff I will tell you as things develop.

A while ago, when I knew about them, I got to read their Manifesto, which inspired me and hooked me in to collaborate with them. You will like it for sure.
Here it is:

"To the adventure seeking individuals, the global citizens guided by wanderlust, the forever exploring discoverers of our modern times. This is your community across continents, your belonging to global unity. This is your life of expressing who you truly are; expressing your unique self through style. A style inspired by the universal love for travelling this beautiful planet of ours and exploring the adventurous unknown.
This is your culture, your vogue. This is HAVAIII."

Following some of their clothing. To check out all their catalogue go to: http://havaiii.com
Also be sure to check out my profile and our collaboration much better explained with some of my pictures here: http://havaiii.com/pages/ale-romo-x-havaiii

Monday quote, and a natural connection..

Horses, horses.. those mysterious and beautiful animals. They say they reflect your dreams and hopes. Some other say, when we ride a horse we borrow freedom. We all know within ourselves Nature has a lot to teach us.

I took this pic of Phillip in Costa Rica this year. Be able to capture this moment was one of the best moments of this trip with friends. Can you feel the harmony between these two?? So great to see this natural connection just in front my eyes

Enjoy your Monday and have a great week!

Inspirational wednesdays, Interview with Roman Königshofer, ocean stoked filmmaker

I met Roman in 2012 in San Sebastian. He and a crew of Austrian filmmakers and photographers were filming a surf documentary all along the coast of France, Spain and Portugal.
By the time I was working at Surfrider Foundation, and they first contacted me to ask for our sponsorship for the project. What I loved the most about my job at SF, was the opportunity to be in contact with all kind of interesting projects involving surfing and ocean stoke people. I'm still thankful for that!

I met Roman at their way back from Portugal, as all the crew stayed in my house for a couple of nights.
For me he had all the looks of a typical Austrian. Tall, super blond and athletic. I thought he was some kind of a professional surfer!, and despite I never got the chance to see him surfing, I know he surfs amazingly good, he understands nature so much, it can't be other way.

After 5 minutes talking I knew we were in the same channel. We could've perfectly spend hours speaking about surf, travels, movies, art, simple living, exploring the world, etc. This is a man living his dreams everyday, working with his passion and I always admired that in other people.

He just launched his new stunning reel a few days ago, and I interviewed him about how he got at this point of his life pursuing his dreams, what traveling means to him and how is working on something you love.

So, here we go:

-Roman, how come you ended up doing the job of your dreams?
I guess because I was always following my gut instinct…

-Why traveling is so important in what you do?
It’s important for me as a person. It puts you in a state of awareness, it inspires and sometimes even transforms you. Instead of thinking how things may be, you see them as they are. And all that reflects in your work.

-What is one of the best memories filming/shooting lately?
I just came back from a short trip/shoot from Switzerland. Two friends of mine came with me. When we were arriving the agenda got messed up though and we constantly had to adapt to the new situation. But we managed to get the needed shots in a very short period. It’s just a good feeling when you manage stressful situations like this. It gives you confidence and let you grow.

-One of your favorites projects?
Shooting the ASP tour back in the days was always fun. I was traveling with great friends and we also had time to surf by ourselves - what more can you ask for?

-What place you would go again and again and why?
I love Morocco. It’s close to Europe but a totally different world. We met the most hospitable people on the earth there and of course the surf is great!

-What is Surfing for you?
Freedom & fun!

-Source of inspiration?
Mother nature. Sunlight. Other people.

-Next destination and future plans of exploring/working?
I’m looking forward to hang out on the mountains at home and sleeping under the stars. Internationally it’s a never ending list, really. But some of the the upper ranks of the charts are definitely Africa, Nepal/India, New Zealand & South America..

Thanks Roman!

Just to finish, did I mentioned he's an excellent photographer too? Check his Flickr here
